Reiki: A Gentle Companion to Western Medicine

When it comes to health and healing, Western medicine has made incredible advances. From life-saving surgeries to powerful medications, modern healthcare is essential. But what if there was a gentle, natural way to support your body alongside traditional treatments? That’s where Reiki comes in.

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice that focuses on balancing the body’s energy to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and encourage natural healing. A Reiki practitioner places their hands lightly on or near the body, allowing energy to flow and help the recipient feel more at ease. It’s completely non-invasive, making it a great complement to Western medical treatments.

Many people use Reiki alongside conventional medicine for various reasons. Cancer patients, for example, often turn to Reiki to help ease the side effects of chemotherapy, like fatigue and nausea. Those recovering from surgery or chronic illnesses may find that Reiki helps reduce pain and speed up their healing process. Even in hospitals, some doctors and nurses recognize Reiki as a valuable tool for improving patients’ overall well-being. This is in large part thanks to recent studies naming Reiki in the top 5 supplemental treatments, alongside yoga, massage, art, and sound therapy.

I have had a partnership with the Cancer Family Care Center at St. Elizabeth in Edgewood to provide Reiki to patients, caregivers, and hospital staff beginning in late 2023.  I am onsite once a month, and it has been an incredibly rewarding experience working with the CFC to make alternative and holistic options available to our local community.

Of course, Reiki isn’t meant to replace medical treatment—it’s not a cure for diseases, and it’s always important to follow your doctor’s advice. But as a supplemental therapy, it can offer emotional support, relaxation, and a sense of peace, which are just as important for healing. It simply breaks down to the fact that when people are relaxed and their energy is in balance, their bodies are more receptive to medical treatments.

If you’re curious about trying Reiki, look for a certified practitioner and don’t be afraid to make sure they click with you. I personally offer free consultations, as do many of the practitioners I know, to answer any questions or concerns beforehand. Whether you’re dealing with stress, illness, or simply want to feel more balanced, Reiki can be a beautiful way to support your health alongside traditional medicine.

Love and good vibes.
